We headed for Adelaide airport in the morning and noticed our flight to Sydney was delayed by 20mins. We couldn't help but think about the Toyota Surf we left behind, and the premature end of our adventure by about 2 months due to medical reasons. In total we drove 27,693kms and completed the last 2,000kms by plane.

We look forward to completing the journey and returning to some of the places we enjoyed.

Ceduna to Adelaide

Early in the morning, we met Rob from the local tour company and Badger who were heading into Ceduna and they kindly offered us a lift into town. Later that day, we arranged flights from Adelaide to Sydney, accommodation and car hire. We had also been speaking to NRMA about freight for our car.

Ceduna is a lovely seaside town, we enjoyed breakfast at the Bakery cafe and later, a seafood lunch. It was a nice way to unwind. Ceduna is the boundary for the fruit fly zone for travellers arriving in S.A. from the west coast.

It was nice to see the lights spread out among the Adelaide Hills as we flew into Adelaide in the early evening. We stayed in a motel north of Glenelg.

Nullarbor

Day 177

We stopped at Mundrabilla roadhouse for fuel and continued to drive across this big country. The scenery around Eucla National Park and W.A./S.A. border is lovely with sand dunes and the sea in the distance. Clocks again had to go forward another 45 mins as you approach the S.A. border. We turned into some of the lookouts and enjoyed a bite to eat near the Great Australian Bight!

We were advised in Perth the leak which was thought to be from the turbo was minor and would be okay to get us home. By the time we drove into the Nullarbor roadhouse we could smell the oil. After having an inspection ourselves and by the mechanic at the Nullarbor roadhouse, we realised the Toyota Surf wouldn't be able to make it home. We were in a hurry to get back to Sydney so we arranged for the car to be freighted by truck through NRMA Premium Care. Julie arranged Rex flights from Ceduna to Adelaide online while Marcelo confirmed with Peter the mechanic that we will need a lift to Ceduna the following morning. Lucky we had Telstra NextG internet and mobile access here.We had to pack minimum supplies to take back to Sydney and check the Surf ensuring valuables weren't left behind.

Day 176

We stopped at Balladonia for fuel. It was Marcelo's turn to drive when we completed the longest stretch of straight road (146.6kms) in Australia.

After Caiguna roadhouse, there's a sign to put clocks forward 45 mins as the region has a different time zone from W.A. and S.A. Most of the roadhouses in the region provide basic motel accommodation, food and fuel. We enjoyed our meal at the Cocklebiddy motel and later noticed that there was no NextG mobile or internet access at this stage.

Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is quite a large mining town with a shopping centre some restaurants. We decided to stay in cabins for the journey back to Sydney which we expect to take about 6-7 days averaging about 600km per day.

The next morning we stopped at Norseman information centre for lunch and picked up some souvenirs. Good for supplies if needed.

It was a nice drive through the Swan Valley as we approached Perth from the north. We enjoyed our stay at Karrinyup Waters caravan park with its large lake and regular visits from ducks. On Sunday evening, went for a drive to Scarborough. It was windy at the time and we noticed that Scarborough beach is a popular spot for windsurfing and parasailing. The tourist drive along the coastline is well worth doing.

On Monday we spent most of the day walking around the city. We liked the way the city was spread out leaving space for sunshine between malls and buildings. Later we went to Cottlesloe and surrounds which was lovely.

During the week we were looking into places where we could get the Surf serviced while at the same time looking around the areas nearby. On Friday 2nd Nov, we had some news which meant that we had to return to Sydney as soon as possible.

On Saturday morning after having the oil changed in the Surf, we drove to Sorrento Beach and Hillarys. The ferry to Rottnest Island leaves from Hillarys Boat Harbour. The Sorrento Quays boardwalk and centre is worth doing. We enjoyed the drive to City Beach and Fremantle and had afternoon tea there. There was a lot to discuss including the journey back to Sydney.

Kalbarri is another popular holiday spot ideal for fishing, surfing and snorkelling.

It was a pleasant drive from Denham to Kalbarri with the landscape changing from sand dunes and desert scrub to forest with pine trees and some grazing country. Being spring, some flowers are in bloom. The forecast was for showers so we decided to stay in a cabin and it rained on the first night. The next day it was sunny and clear so we headed up to the various lookouts - Castle Cove, Natural Bridge, Island Rock, Grandstand Rock & Shellhouse Gorge, Eagle Gorge, Pot Alley and Red Bluff all of which were stunning. We lunched at Chinaman's beach where the Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean. In the afternoon we headed to a lookout and Nature's Window at Kalbarri National Park which were awesome. On the way back into town we stopped at Meanarra Hill.

The town has good supplies and mobile/internet access. No camping allowed at Kalbarri NP.

Shark Bay - Denham

We stopped at Billabong roadhouse around mid morning and continued to head south along the highway before the turn-off at the Overlander roadhouse. Along the road to Denham, we looked at the Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool Nature Reserve, Nanga Bay and Shell Beach. We noticed there were lots of flies around and at this time of year, it's either the flies or the wind! We set up camp in Denham and went for a walk along the beach. Denham is a lovely seaside town with supplies, mobile and internet access.

The next morning we drove to Monkey Mia Conservation Reserve and saw the dolphins at their feeding time between 7.30am-1.00pm. The dolphins are fed a maximum of 3 feeds per day. Marcelo was picked to feed one of the dolphins. We spent half the day here with the dolphins and pelicans and also went for a swim. It was magic. Afterwards we headed to Red Bluff, Little Lagoon and Eagle Bluff lookout. At Eagle Bluff lookout, we spotted some sharks swimming in the sea. There are some good bush camp spots also around these areas.

Later that evening, a storm passed through the area.

We enjoyed lunch here and driving around the coast. There were cars passing through the town and caravan park with signs about the Gascoyne Rally. The region is well known for growing fruit and veg.

Coral Bay is at the southern end of Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. Tours of the reef and fishing are popular here, alternatively, you can swim out to the reef at Bill's Bay to snorkel. We were a bit disappointed that the chalet (cabin) we stayed at the Bayview didn't have a TV. The town water is from the artesian basin with drinking water available outside. So I recommend a tent site would be best for an overnight stay. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the swim at Bill's Bay and scenic drive around the coastline.

Exmouth - Cape Range NP, Tulki Beach camp

We did some more driving along the West Coastal Highway and were amazed when we approached the coastline at Exmouth. There is a bit of development happening at the moment. It is worth stopping at the Visitor Centre to get weather and track conditions for Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. If you planning on going to Cape Range NP, you need to be self sufficient as there is no water and no mobile/internet reception. Pit toilets are provided. Ned's and Lakeside camps were full so we continued to Tulki Beach where we set up camp and enjoyed the sunset. It was nice to see kangaroos in the wild near the beach and later in the evening, Marcelo spotted a snake near the toilet.

Ningaloo Reef protects the beaches and bays from the sea. In the distance, you can see the white rolling waves pushing up against the reef. The camping area at Tulki Beach is closest to the stunning Turquoise Bay.

On Wednesday, it was extremely windy so we went for a drive through Cape Range where the sealed road ends at Yardi Creek. We did the Yardi Creek and Gorge walk (under 2kms) and were impressed with the view of the gorge and the creek (which is more like a river) where it meets the sea. Later that day, we visited the crystal clear waters of Sandy Bay. Also had a look at Kori Bay and Mangrove Bay. That afternoon we spoke to our new camp neighbours, Gunther and Maggie from Germany.

On Thursday, the highlight of our trip so far in W.A. was snorkelling at Turquoise Bay. Later we went to the drift area at the southern end of Turquoise Bay. The drift area has a stronger current (than the bay) and the coral and fish seen here were much larger - absolute heaven on earth!

The great thing about Cape Range is access, clean pristine waters, organised camp sites and abundant with wildlife.We spotted an eagle flying with a fish in its mouth.

We stopped at Port Hedland for some brekkie and sightseeing and we also headed to the town centre of South Hedland. We agreed to do Karijini National Park and Millstream-Chichester National Park another time as the heat was too much for us and the Toyota Surf. We continued to Karratha. A lunch stop in the town and we continued to do more sightseeing at Dampier. Later in the afternoon we went for a swim in the resort pool.

Another long drive from Broome to Eighty Mile Beach via Sandfire Roadhouse with more desert in between. From the Great Northern Highway the turn-off road to the very long beach passes through Wallal Downs. We stayed in a cabin and thought it was an excellent caravan park with large shady sites and walking distance to beach. Good for fishing and quad bikes.

We arrived in Broome very early in the morning, completing the Savannah Way (which we started in Cairns). We did some sight-seeing before setting up camp. We were impressed with the large spaces provided for tent and vehicle at the caravan park. Broome's sea breeze was refreshing after being in hot and humid weather crossing N.T. /W.A. border for several weeks.

Broome is where the desert meets the sea. Some memorable highlights of Broome include Gantheaume Point and pindun (coloured) sands and rocks at Riddell Beach, going for a swim at Cable Beach and watching the camel tours. We visited the Port and enjoyed scenic drives along Roebuck Bay and Town Beach.

A very long drive in 40 degree heat along the Savannah way. We had to turn the air-con off to get the car up to 80km without overheating. We noticed lots of Boab trees along the road. Also, there were many roadside parking areas and 24hr camp roadside rest areas. In the evening, we stopped at Willare near the Fitzroy River.

We're back in Kununurra, in 40 degree heat, before heading west towards Broome. We have our car back from the mechanic and hope to head off soon. We have driven over 20,000 km. The map shows our trip route so far.

Purnululu National Park

Purnululu National Park (and the Bungle Bungle Range) has been one of the highlights of the trip so far. It’s a great place to visit and we can see why it is now World Heritage listed. If you ever get the chance you should try and visit this place. We did over 5 km of walking to get into the gorges but it was well worth it. The 53 km 4WD track into the park takes about 2 hours to drive because it, and the tracks inside the park, are very rough, slow going, and corrugated. Our Landcruiser hire car handled it easily and we can see how having a Lancruiser during our around Australia trip would have made our trip more comfortable. Our Toyota Surf is very good but it’s a bit small in size for our big trip and not as heavy duty as the ‘cruiser, although it has served us well for over six years.

Kununurra and Wyndham

During the drive north from Alice Springs our 4WD had been lacking power and the engine had been running hot, so we took it into the Toyota dealer in Kununurra to have it looked at. The NRMA Premium Membership kicked into action again and they partly paid for a rental Toyota Landcruiser so that we could continue sight seeing while our Toyota Surf was being repaired. The fuel primer pump in our Surf was found to be faulty and leaking air into the fuel system, but the worst problem was that the automatic transmission is faulty and needs to be overhauled. The primer pump can easily be changed here in Kununurra but the auto transmission can’t be fixed here so we’ll have to drive at under 90km/hr, to keep the engine temperature down, until we can get it fixed in Perth. Perth is still very far from here and the constant hot 39 degree days don’t help. Every day is 39 or 40 degrees, hot and sunny.

Today we drove from Gregory National Park in the Northern Territory to Kununurra in Western Australia. It was a scenic drive and we also visited the Gregory Tree. We had to go through a border crossing when we crossed the state border into Western Australia and we couldn't be carrying any fruit, so we ate our apples at lunch before crossing the border. We also had to set our clock back one and a half hours.

The annual Alice Desert Festival was on between 14 September and 23 September. We were impressed with the Royal Military College Band, Duntroon, from Canberra, that played in Todd Mall on the same evening as the monthly Thursday night market. During our stay in Alice, we also had a look at the Olive Pink Botanic Garden, the Old Telegraph Station (included a short walk to the original Alice Spring), and the Red Centre Photographic Exhibition at Lasseter Casino. At the caravan park, we met Thomas a vietnam war veteran who has been one of the locals for over 30 years. We've enjoyed our break here in Alice.

From Kings Canyon to Yulara it is about 300km drive on sealed road. During the drive on Luritja Road we spotted an unhealthy looking wild camel. Later, we swapped drivers and enjoyed the various lookouts along the Lasseter Highway. Mount Conner was impressive and the nearby large dry salt lakes. There are some large red sand dunes and we enjoyed a picnic lunch stop where we were greeted by some Zebra Finches. It was exciting to see Uluru in the distance as we approached Yulara. We have seen Uluru on TV, in books and magazines but nothing compares to seeing it in the desert landscape; it is breathtaking. On the western side of the Lasseter Highway you can see Kata Tjuta, another rocky remnant of prehistoric times with amazing colours.

We set up camp at the Yulara resort and had good Telstra NextG mobile reception and Bigpond wireless internet access. In the evening, Julie spotted a Spinifex Hopping Mouse at our camp. Wild rabbits were also seen around the camp.

As this is a high tourist area with lots of school groups, I recommend avoid camp spots next to the coach areas until new facility blocks are built. Although we had a fairly good size and private spot Marcelo and I were woken up at 4.30am by students chatting on their way to use the facilities.

On Tuesday the climb was closed due to high temperatures over 36 degrees. We obtained a three day park entry permit and souvenir information kit on the road to Uluru. We did the tour guided Mala walk. We learned about many things and that there have been 37 deaths in 20 years of people climbing Uluru. Later we also did the self guided Mutitjulu walk. It was excellent to see the famous rock up close and imagine what it would be like with water running down the gorges and waterholes. In the afternoon we went to the Olgas and explored the area. On the way back we spotted are large goanna near the Uluru sunset viewing area.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed a swim at the lovely Desert Sails pool. We stopped by the bar before heading to the Uluru sunset viewing area again to take our last pics. Be sure to get in early as the carpark gets busy.

A quick fuel and snack stop at Hermannsberg before we headed to Kings Canyon. After travelling over 200kms on the heavily corrugated Mereenie Loop, we finally made it to Kings Canyon. On the way, the Surf heated up a couple of times and we pulled over to let it cool down. It took us about 4hrs to get there. There is a lookout just before the sealed road section near the Kings Canyon end of the Mereenie Loop. We set up camp at the Kings Canyon Resort in a private spot on the red sand. A dingo was quick to grab our almost empty rubbish bag around 5.30pm. We were surprised at how quick and quiet the dingo was.

The next morning we did the Kings Canyon creek walk to the impressive canyon. We could hear and see the helicopters above doing the scenic the flights. Later in the day we went for a swim in the resort pool, must do with temperatures between 32-35 degrees celcius. We didn't have Telstra NextG mobile reception or Bigpond wireless internet access. The next day we did the resort gorge walk followed by the sunset viewing platform. We enjoyed the scenic walks very much. Later we had a drink and dinner at the Outback Bar and BBQ.

Day 124

We left Ormiston Gorge and headed to the carpark lookout of Mount Sonder. There are many walks to do in the MacDonnell ranges and you can easily spend a couple of weeks exploring the area. We stopped at Glen Helen resort and got a 3-day permit (just over $2) to allow us to travel between Gosse Bluff, Hermannsberg and the Mereenie Loop through to Kings Canyon. There is an option to travel via the sealed road which means heading back towards Alice Springs and the Stuart Highway but this option is longer and you don't need a permit.

Marcelo and I did the walk to Redbank Gorge and had lunch there. Then we headed along the unsealed, rough and rocky road to Gosse Bluff. There was an unmarked steep 4WD hill which was an excellent lookout to Gosse Bluff, one of the largest craters we have seen. We drove near the crater and it was getting late so we headed towards Hermannsberg. On the way to Hermannsberg, we stopped at Albert Namatjira's old house, a well known aboriginal artist.

Hermannsberg was a historic lutheran mission which was handed back to the aboriginal community over recent years. A quick supply stop and driver swap before heading to Palm Valley, a 4WD only recommended track through Finke Gorge National Park. Just before the national park entrance we noticed some brumbies. The dirt road is slow going as there is a group of about 5 vehicles from Tasmania ahead of us (we heard them on the CB radio). We enjoyed the drive and the scenery with lots of rocky outcrops and gorges in the distance. We set up camp and Julie noticed that we hadn't seen any palm trees. That night, there was a talk by one of the rangers about the palm trees and the various walks at the camp fire. During the talk we spotted a dingo.

In the morning we were woken up by some ring neck parrots (aka Port Lincoln Parrots). Marcelo did some rough four wheel driving over rocky terrain to get us to Palm Valley. The palm trees mostly cabbage palms and cycads here are native and remnants from prehistoric times. It was amazing to see how they can survive in such harsh conditions. We enjoyed the walk in Palm Valley very much.

The drive via the sealed road through the MacDonnell ranges was amazing and very scenic. When driving through the West MacDonnell Ranges National Park we stopped at Simpsons Gap and Ellery Creek Big Hole. At Ellery Creek we noticed quite a few people wading in the creek. There are signs advising that the water can be quite cold. We enjoyed the rocky escarpments and gorges in the national park and the lookouts which are great for panoramic pics and video. We also stopped at the Ochre Pits, a colourful rock formation. We set up camp at the breathtaking Ormiston Gorge and did the walk to the Ghost Gum lookout and the waterhole.

After leaving the Devils Marbles we headed further south and passed through the Tropic of Capricorn again as we had also passed it in Qld. We saw an impressive statue of an aboriginal man on a hill at Aileron then continued south and arrived at Alice Springs in the afternoon then checked out the city centre and the sunset from Anzac Hill. We were relieved we had completed over 1,500km, since Darwin, safe and sound and enjoyed some of the scenery in between. We are planning the next leg of our trip to Uluru via the West MacDonnell National Park and Kings Canyon before returning to Alice Springs.

We continued driving along the Stuart Highway and noticed the landscape changed, ie. the dirt is more red and becoming more desert-like with smaller bushy scrubs and grasses. There are rocky outcrops and large hills in the distance. There were some sections of the Stuart Highway which had locusts and we also saw some red kangaroos. Just before reaching Tennant Creek we stopped at The Pebbles, a sacred site for aboriginal women. About 7km before Tennant Creek we lunched at the scenic Mary Ann Dam.

We enjoyed our camp at Karlu Karlu (The Devils Marbles) and did a sunset walk. The stars at night were amazing. We enjoyed watching the spinifex pigeons and also spotted a dingo.

Day 119

Today we did more driving along the Stuart Highway and noticed various WWII sites along the way. We stopped at the Daly Waters pub which we enjoyed very much especially the free beers. There was lots of memorabilia including underwear and the Thong Tree - (the ones for your feet!). Free beer I hear you say? We ordered a couple of beers and the waitress asked Marcelo if it was "heads or tails"? He replied "tails". She flipped the coin and said "enjoy your beer"!

Day 118

We enjoyed the day very much and was topped off when we saw the cars from the Variety Bash drive through the 4WD only road in Litchfield National Park. Wangi Falls were impressive and quite busy. Julie liked the many layers of waterfalls and rockpools at Buley Rockholes, also in Litchfield National Park. We headed as far south along the Stuart Highway and stopped at Adelaide River Inn, famous for the buffalo in the movie Crocodile Dundee.

Batshit, Ants, Flies & Mossies!

A trip like this is not complete without some life's little irritants. Some of the parks we stayed at had a total fire ban so the onslaught of mossies arrived just before sunset until late evening and possibly bats. We had a nasty case of both at Myall Lakes National Park even though it was a very beautiful place. We had to do some extra cleaning work ie. bat poo off the tent. Also, avoid setting up the tent under any trees or anywhere near where bats are or ants nests. Some good insect repellent (Aeroguard or Ridd which are high in Deet) during the day works wonders and covering up at night when outdoors. In Darwin, a few ants managed to get through the fridge protector and into our fridge and steal some of our leftover donuts - bummer!

Friday 31 August to Friday 7 September
Days 110 - 117

We stayed at the Boomerang Motel and Caravan Park at Virginia (near Palmerston), south of Darwin. The pool came in handy as the weather was about 34 degrees each day and some with high humidity. We had to get the windscreen replaced and the car serviced as it had already done over 5000km since Weipa. Later that day, we had a look around the area and stopped at Casuarina Shopping Centre for dinner.

On Saturday, we enjoyed the afternoon out walking around the city of Darwin at Bicentennial Park, Smith Street Mall, Cullen Bay, lookout at Dudley Point and East Point Reserve. It seemed to be a bit on the quiet side and not many people around with the exception of Smith Street Mall.

On Sunday, we stayed at camp and later ventured out to Mindil Beach Sunset Market which is a must do if you are ever in Darwin.

Later during the week we spent more time walking around the city and checked out the Botanic Gardens, Mitchell Centre and Wharf Precinct areas.

While at the caravan park, we met Jeff and Lyn from Bundaberg (originally from Swansea). Tim and Adele and family from border of NSW-Victoria. Denzil and Wendy also from Victoria. Also met a couple of guys who got stuck on West Alligator Head in Kakadu because of the tide, but were rescued by others near their camp. The guys were working in Darwin for a while before heading back to Mackay.

Day 110

Our last stop in Kakadu National Park was the viewing platform at Mamukala Wetlands and were impressed how large the area was. We saw lots of birds including Magpie Geese and colourful lillies. We didn't quite make it in time for the lotus leaf which bloom around September/October. After leaving Kakadu, we continued along the Arnhem Highway and Marcelo spotted a croc in one of the creeks on the road. It is about 250km to Darwin. We lunched at the picnic area at Mary River crossing. There was more driving along the freeway with lots of nothing in between until we arrived at Virginia south of Darwin.

Day 109

We are happy that the Surf is going again. We drove east and set up camp at Merl a large campground with facilities, but no mobile reception. We then head towards Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River which is the Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land boundary. From the viewing platform at Cahills Crossing, Marcelo saw an eagle catch some prey from the tidal river. Julie spotted some barramundi jumping from the water. We both counted about six saltwater crocs - some were the largest we've seen. At the time we arrived the depth of the East Alligator River was 0.5-0.6m. We saw a fisherman standing in the water near the road and couldn't believe our eyes, as there are crocs on both sides of the river. We watched, filmed and photographed some cars, a road train and military truck drive across. Within a period of about 40mins the depth had risen to 0.9m. It was entertaining watching the crocs drift along the water current and occasionally catching a fish rather effortlessly. One croc managed to cross the river and another just sat on the road while cars at each end were waiting until the tide went down before crossing. We also saw some boat tours on the river and it was fun to watch the reactions of the people on board.

After lunching by the river, we drove to the border store and Guyulambi boat ramp. It was scenic here with the sandstone formations around the Bardedjildji walk.

Late in the afternoon, we looked at the rock art sites at Ubirr. We enjoyed this walk and scenic panoramic lookout very much. It is a relatively short walk with some steep climbs but well worth it. You can have a rest at the art sites on the way and decipher the pictures painted and carved in the rock. There are views of escarpment, wetlands, gorges and rocky outcrops not to mention the sights and sounds of the wildlife.

Kakadu National Park - Jabiru

Day 106-108

One of our camp neighbours, Andrew, an off duty tour operator, overheard Julie discussing with the camp manager at Mardugal that our car had broken down near Gurnamarr. Andrew offered us assistance and told us that we had just missed getting a ride with Greg the camp manager from Gurnamarr earlier that morning who was staying at Cooinda. He also said the tour buses that head towards Jim Jim Falls leave very early in the morning each day.

Thomas picked us up and took us to Gurnamarr where we left our car the night before, as our only other options would be to hitch hike or call NRMA. Julie had spoken to the Mobil service station at Jabiru and they advised that they don't tow from the 4WD road at Gurnamarr, only from the sealed highway. There was still a possibility that the Surf would start when we got to Gurnamarr so we wanted to go there and try it.

Later, Greg the camp manager at Gurnamarr looked at the Surf and he and Marcelo got the Surf started. Gary, a local contractor is also there watching us together with Thomas. We parted with Thomas and thanked Greg and head off. Unfortunately the Surf died again further up the road. Gary happened to be passing by and offers us a tow back to our camp. Gary said he was heading to Jabiru (which is where we were heading after Mardugal) so he offered to tow us a further 50kms to Jabiru. Julie and Marcelo were covered in red dirt after this adventure because we couldn't turn on the air-con in the car, with the windows down the dirt just stuck to our sweat from the heat. Just to top the whole adventure off, a small rock had hit and cracked the windscreen on the passenger side.

A big thankyou to everyone to helped us, especially Thomas and Gary.

Jabiru is a mining and tourist town with three resorts (Lakeview, Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn and Kakadu Resort) each with motel, budget and camping accommodation. Luckily we have NRMA premium care and they looked after our stay at the Kakadu lodge which has a very nice pool.

The mechanics at Mobil repaired the fuel pick-up pipe. Apparently it was cracked 80% around.

Days 104-105

Even though we are still in the national park, it is still over 50km to the next camp and there is more sightseeing to do on the way. We stopped at Bukbukluk lookout with an excellent panorama with more greenery and escarpment ahead of us. After setting up camp at Mardugal, we head to Cooinda which is one of the resort areas within the national park. At the Gagudju Lodge in Cooinda, there is fuel, supplies and a varied range of accommodation together with a bar and bistro and a restaurant. Telstra Internet and mobile reception are excellent. Tours are also booked at the Gagudju Lodge. Marcelo has been hanging to see some saltwater crocs, so we booked the sunset cruise of the wetlands area at Yellow Water. Next to Cooinda, we had a look at the Warradjun Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Julie enjoyed the cultural centre with interactive displays and excellent artwork and souvenirs.

We enjoyed the wetlands sunset cruise thanks to our guide Peter. We saw about four saltwater crocs, a dingo (which is quite rare in to see on the cruise), jacana (for bird nerds), egrets and some people catching barramundi. Apparently, there are over 300 types of bird species. What surprised us most was how large the wetlands area is and how different the water levels are in the wet season. Being a Saturday night, we splurged and had dinner at Cooinda and watched the big screen TV, a luxury after being in the outback for over two weeks.

On Sunday, we set aside the day to explore the Jim Jim and Twin Falls area. We drove just over 6kms along Kakadu Highway then turned down a 4WD only track towards Jim Jim Falls. The road is heavily corrugated in some sections. On the road down we passed the grader and hope the road is in better condition on the way back! At Gurnamarr, Greg the camp manager suggested we do the boat trip to Twin Falls and said there was a creek crossing about 105cm deep and quite long. Marcelo asked about the base of the creek crossing, and was assured it was solid.

The drive although it is hard going, is very scenic with escarpments and very sandy past the Gurnamarr camp. We got to the picnic area for lunch just before the Jim Jim Creek crossing and watched some cars go through. Some tourists driving Nissan Patrols without a snorkel asked if we were going through so they can see the depth. In the meantime, another vehicle passes through and we told them our thoughts; if it is a rental car, not to go through. It's too risky especially without a snorkel. After seeing more cars pass through, they decided to turn back.

We continued to do the Jim Jim Creek crossing by ourselves. Our Surf has a snorkel so it shoudn't be a problem. The worst that could happen is that we got stuck and sit and wait in the car knowing there are cars passing by soon. The creek probably has crocs, so if we were to get stuck, we'd have to stay put or climb out the window and sit on the roof (not good if we are to be towed or winched out). The Surf bumped along the rough road and flowing creek and made it across. It was scary and exciting stuff. Marcelo couldn't remember exactly how we got across but we did it. There were more corrugations until we got to the end of the road where there is a long gorge walk that goes above Twin Falls. Alternatively there is a short walk, a boat ride then another short walk to the base of Twin Falls. We took the short walk and boat option. It was well worth it. From the boat, the water is crystal clear and gorge is breathtaking. There is a bit of walk along beach and climbing up rocks passing three plunge pools and a boardwalk.

Twin Falls had a good amount of flow with a sheer backdrop of gorges; amazing stuff. Swimming is prohibited beneath the falls and the whole Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls tracks are impassable in the wet season. Scenic flights are very popular here and Marcelo and I are proud that we made it in the Surf.

About four cars left Twin Falls, on the way back, around the same time as us, so we all crossed the creek one after the other. A Kia Sorrento went through without a snorkel, fortunately they had a cover over the front bonnet. Marcelo took some photos of Thomas Riggert from Germany crossing Jim Jim Creek. We decided to head back to our camp because it was getting late when we noticed a Landrover, one of the cars in the group that was ahead of us, was stopping and starting. The group then let us pass because they were moving too slow.

Unfortunately further ahead, the Surf was losing power and we had to pull over and let the group pass us. Marcelo kept the Surf going slow in low range 4WD only going about 7km per hr at full throttle. Eventually the Surf stopped and wouldn't start. Earlier Julie had tried the UHF radio to get in touch with the camp manager at Gurnamarr close by; no luck. Ten minutes later an Aussie Adventure tour bus pulled up behind us, with several others behind them including Thomas. The tour guide had a look and said he thought it was a fuel supply problem and he towed us to Gurnamarr camp. Unfortunately there is no mobile reception at Gurnamarr and it is getting dark and the mossies are getting too comfy around us.

Thomas kindly offered to wait with us and drive us back together with some of our stuff to our camp at Mardugal. We left our car on the side of the road and went back to our camp 70 kms away. Thomas invited us to join him for dinner at Cooinda. Thomas also offered to do another pick up and drop off the next day. We are very grateful to Thomas for being there to help us and his company.

Kakadu National Park - Gunlom

Day 103

We continue driving along the Stuart Highway and stop at Pine Creek lookout. Later we turn back to Kakadu Highway and have a lunch stop beside Mary River roadhouse near the southern entrance of Kakadu National Park. The temperature is very hot and humid (mid thirties) and every bit of shade helps. We decide to go and check out the camping at Kambolgie and we passed through Guratba (Coronation Hill) and Gimbat picnic area on South Alligator river. Our first sight of escarpment and large boulders are along this road. At Gimbat picnic area, we walked down what was left of a ford crossing and many trees that had been uprooted most likely from the wet season.

We decide it is too early to camp and continue to Gunlom. At Gunlom we enjoy the waterfall, plunge pool and camp. The national park facilities are quite good, with hot showers and activities such as slide shows and basket making.

Julie had another go at making some damper.

Days 101-102

A quick supply stop at Katherine town centre before setting up camp at the Shady Lane Tourist Park. Katherine had the first large supermarket (Woolworths) we have been to in almost 2 weeks. We enjoyed it here with good mobile/internet access and large shady camp sites and excellent facilities. Marcelo loved the pool.

On Thursday we did a two hour panoramic cruise which took us through two of the gorges at Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. It is a popular spot for canoeing and hiking. The river and gorge are stunning. We are now heading to Kakadu and Darwin.

Continued drive through Limmen National Park and noticed a pelican on the road. Later we stopped at the Towns River, a popular camp and fishing spot. Enjoyed a lunch stop at the stunning Lomarieun Lagoon. Originally we were going to camp at Tomato Island or along the river but decided we will continue driving towards Mataranka and have a look at Roper Bar along the way. At Roper Bar we saw two road trains approaching from Arnhem Land across the Roper River.

We set up camp at Jalmurark (near 12 mile yards). The next day we went to the Mataranka Homestead which has natural thermal pool - excellent! There is also a replica of the homestead where Jeannie and Aenus Gunn lived. Jeannie is well known for her story "We of the Never Never". We also looked at Bitter Springs and the Elsey Historic Cemetery and homestead ruins just south of the town towards Larrimah. The town here (Mataranka) has Next G access and a good stop for supplies.

An excellent drive along Nathan River road. We picnicked at the southern Lost City rock formation and did the walk. We noticed lots of butterflies - very nice! There are some excellent camp spots with toilets in this national park. We set up camp at Butterfly Springs. Marcelo liked the fireplaces provided. Here we saw a small freshwater croc in the spring.

Northern Territory - Borroloola

Days 96-97

Before arriving at Borroloola we had been driving long distances. It is important to carry enough fuel and more importantly, water. I found it helpful to prepare our lunch, which is usually sandwiches in the morning as there is very little in between Burketown and Borroloola (over 500 kms). You can feel the heat even in the shade.

When we reached the northern territory, we had to turn our clocks back half an hour. More driving along the Savannah Way and some river crossings on Robinson and Wearyan Rivers. Some good bush camp sites here and keep an eye out for the croc warning signs. Creek crossings have a rocky bottom and passable in the dry. Always check road conditions. The road here is very good and becomes sealed shortly before Borroloola.

We camped at the caravan park at Borroloola near McArthur River and were just in time for the annual Rodeo. It's a first for Marcelo and I and we enjoyed it. There is a small supermarket in town and mobile phone and internet access is very good.

Day 95

Interesting 4WD drive from Adels Grove to Doomadgee. Just follow the signs to King Fisher Camp (KFC) on way to Doomadgee which is the last fuel stop on the Savannah Way until Borroloola in northern territory. Hells Gate and Wollogorang road houses are closed at the time of our trip.

We had lunch at boulders near Hell's Gate before reaching the Queensland / Northern Territory border.
We camped late in the day. Good bush camp sites on either site of the Calvert river. It started to rain and became rainy and windy the whole night.

Days 93-94

More driving and a lunch stop at impressive Leichhardt River. More driving and a fuel stop at Gregory on the way to Adel's Grove.

Adel's Grove is an oasis in the outback. There is a large variety of large shady trees with Lawn Hill Creek which runs through the National Park and Adel's Grove. It is definitely worth staying a minimum of 2 nights as there is lots to see and do. Also to relax in the shade and have a rest. We enjoyed the walk to Island Stack and Cascade Walk. Later a walk to Indarri Falls with lots of Ta ta lizard sightings.

We also drove to Riversleigh Site D and did the self guided fossil tour. We also had a look at the bush camp sites at Riversleigh and drove across Gregory River.

Normanton & Karumba

Again more driving with scenic lookouts and a quick lunch stop at historic Georgetown.

We stayed at a caravan park in Normanton which has a huge pool and natural hot spring water in the spa. Normanton is located near the Gulf of Carpentaria and we noticed most of the visitors here and at Karumba come for the fishing on the river which meets the Gulf - quite impressive. At Normanton, we looked at the historic Railway Station. Train tours run between Normanton and Croydon during the week. We also saw the life size statue of the largest crocodile caught named "Krys". Karumba is well known for its barramundi and Marcelo and I enjoyed our lunch here.

Undara Lava Tubes

Marcelo and I did a short tour of some of the lava tubes. Until recently we didn't realise these tubes existed here in Australia and we found the tour very interesting. Our guide, Tim Collins was informative and we spotted wallaroos, wallabies and kangaroos on the way to and from the tubes. We also enjoyed a walk to the Bluff lookout. The sun is very hot in this part of QLD, even at 10am in winter! Undara Lodge has good facilities for a place that is quite remote.

Day 88

I strongly recommend the drive from Cairns to Atherton tablelands. We lunched at the picturesque Lake Barrine. We drove to Yungaburra and checked out the historic Curtain Fig Tree.

Danbulla National Park and State Forest surrounding Lake Tinaroo is amazing, nice and green with lots of space. We enjoyed our camp at Fong-on Bay. Marcelo saw a large python amongst some of the stacked timber. Lots of water birds and not too noisy in the morning. We also looked at the Cathedral Fig Tree and Mobo Creek Crater.

Another scenic drive along the coast around Port Douglas heading back to Cairns. Claudio assisted us with repairs to the front shock absorbers on the Surf - thankyou! We replaced the front shocks with new Old Man Emu shocks from ARB. Lots to do including updating the blog, picking up supplies and washing.

Wonga Beach

Day 84

Back on the bitumen and heading north east to the beach at Wonga via Mossman. More impressive lookouts with rainforests in between. We camped at the northern end of the beach at Pinnacle Village. It was very windy but otherwise nice and peaceful.

We decide to head back to Cairns during the work week mostly to fix the shock absorber and pick up supplies before heading west to Northern Territory.

After Hann River Roadhouse we drove to Laura, an old mining town. The road is very good here. We get some info from the Cultural Centre and go and have a look at the Split Rock Gallery. An enjoyable 30-45 min walk return trip to some aboriginal art sites. The views are amazing. A scenic drive to Lakeland and continuing on to Mount Carbine and Mount Molloy rest area. It's worth stopping at Bob's Lookout.

Mount Molloy has a pleasant camp spot with gold coin donation. More caravans here than the last 2 weeks!

We met Al who rode a motorbike and is a farmer from New Zealand. A busy time for the staff here preparing meals and drinks for the road crew. They have lots of pets here, horses, emus, peacocks and later in the evening we saw an owl.

Day 81

More driving this time we took the Southern Bypass Road and noticed some heavy corrugations north of Captain Billy Landing. So far we are impressed that we have made it to the top and seen a fair bit of the Cape. Unfortunately, we had a near miss with an oncoming vehicle and later we realised there was damage to the front shock absorber from the heavy corrugations. Luckily Marcelo kept the Surf under control. Later we pulled over and Claudio assisted with putting the shock back in place and using some washers to secure it until we returned to Cairns. It is handy to have a swiss army officer around who specialises in mechanics.

The road improves and we continued to Moreton Telegraph Station where we camped for the night. Claudio was impressed with the stick insects we have here in Oz.

A lovely beachfront bush camp site. Just before sunset we saw lots of crabs and we saw some fish jumping out of the water. We also watched some pelicans here. The next morning Marcelo, Claudio and I drove 7kms north via the beach to the ship wreck. It is easier to access at low tide.

Days 77 - 79

In the morning, we went for a walk to Eliot Falls. There was a water snake on the other side of the falls. We went for a walk and a quick swim at Twin Falls. Later we continued to drive up via OTL and crossed Canal Creek and Sam Creek then took bypass to Jardine Ferry because heard Nolans Brook (aka Bridge Creek) can be quite deep. Canal Creek was a bit tricky because there was a large hole with layers of rock. Marcelo had to reverse and do a 3pt turn in the creek which was a first! We made it to the Jardine River Ferry crossing and continued towards Seisia. We stopped to have a look at some bush camps in the National Park. We noticed some guys (also camped at Eliot Falls) that were driving a Nissan Patrol Ute attempting to cross the Jardine River from the south near a beach. Unfortunately the car only made it less about one third of the way and had to be winched out by two other cars.

We drove through Umagico and Bamaga and continued to Seisia where we set up camp. We noticed the internet connection was better at Bamaga. We heard via Jeff that if you have an external antenna you can get connected to the internet at Seisia.

30 July - Drove to Bamaga via the Croc Tent. Enjoyed a nice lunch at Punsand Bay with Claudio. Later Jeff, Kari, Rowan and Kylie joined us.

We then did the walk along headland track to tip of Cape York and back along the beach (low tide - full moon). As we left a quad bike tour were on their way to the tip. Stopped for some sunset pics at Loyalty Beach.

31 July - Bash plate was coming off the Surf so Marcelo removed to fix later. We drove carefully to the picture perfect Somerset beach (where Frank Jardine and Sana are buried); Fly Point, WW2 ruins and Bamaga.

Day 76

This is where the adventure began. From Bramwell Roadhouse we decide to go via the OTL and agree to carry Claudio's pannier as he can ride only in one wheel rut on either side of the narrow road and he could lose balance.

At each creek crossing Claudio and Marcelo walked through to check best path before crossing. Sometimes Julie crossed to film and take pics. We crossed through Palm Creek, Ducie River, Dulhunty River, Bertie Creek (with a dogleg) and Gunshot Creek. There were many other crossings such as North and South Alice creeks and Archer but some of these were causeways or were dry so I have not included them.

At Gunshot Creek we met up with Jeff, Kari, Rowan and Kylie again. We also met Michael and Barbara from Victoria. Everyone was standing in the creek waiting to watch us to pass. It was fun and nerve wracking at the same time. There were about three approaches to choose from hard, you gotta be kidding and difficult. So we chose what we thought would be the least difficult.

Later we crossed through Cockatoo Creek and stopped at Sheldon Lagoon which had some turtles. Finally we arrived at Fruit Bat falls and went in for a quick dip. It gets so hot up here during the day that any bit of shade or water makes a difference. Impossible to imagine in summer. We then drove to Eliot Creek and set up camp. It was a tiring day especially for Marcelo and Claudio.

At the falls we met a couple from Kellyville, NSW who caught some cane toads.

Day 75

The drive from Weipa through Batavia Downs was pleasant and scenic. When we turned onto Peninsula Developmental Road we notice there are sections that have road works and many dips.

We set up camp at Bramwell junction and went and had a look at the first obstacle of the track - Palm Creek. We decide to have a chat to some passers-by to check on the road conditions. There is a choice to take the Southern Bypass which is corrugated, and excludes all the creek crossings, alternatively take the Old Telegraph Line (OTL) which is slow going and more scenic but is a 4WD track.

Later we met Jeff and Kari, Rowan and Kylie. Claudio is also at the camp with us. There is another group with 2 dogs. Julie chatted with Vee from Lyon, France who is working at Bramwell for about a month then moving on.

Our Surf is well and truly covered in red dust and dirt. The weather is warm and humid. The first thing we noticed as we approached Weipa is the traffic lights and a haul truck going past. Weipa houses one of the largest bauxite mines in the world. We agree to do the mine tour the next day and we enjoyed that very much.

We set up camp near the beach and met Tully and his wife from Rollingstone, QLD. Later we went for a walk and Marcelo remembered the motorbike he saw at Hann River the day before. So we had a chat to Claudio Angelini from Switzerland and mentioned that the road to Batavia Downs was in good condition as he is heading that way also. The next day we chatted to our new camp neighbours - Craig, Mel, Saxon and Jess from W.A.

The town has good facilities with internet and mobile reception and a Woolworths supermarket.

We stopped along the Normanby River for lunch which is very picturesque. Battlecamp road was extremely corrugated and we passed some people with a trailer that hadn't survived the corrugations.

We noticed some scrub bulls on the road on the way to the camp about 15km from the ranger station. We set up camp at Twelve Mile Waterhole. There were at least five freshwater crocodiles that we could see from a distance. Otherwise a very pleasant bush camp spot with huge palm trees.

We stayed at the Peninsula Caravan Park. Enjoyed the lookout with the lighthouse even though the wind almost blew us off the hill. The Endeavour River looks amazing.

The drive from Cairns towards Port Douglas and Daintree is very scenic along the far north coast of Queensland. We drove onto the ferry crossing at Daintree River and enjoyed a scenic drive through rainforest. As we head off from the Daintree ferry, driving through rainforest, we caught a glimpse of cassowary with three babies at a creek crossing. Unfortunately, we didn't get a photo, they were gone by the time we got the camera! It was a nice beachfront campground at Cape Tribulation aka Cape Trib. Enjoyed a walk along the beach and did some of the boardwalk.

The next day, down the track, Marcelo assisted some backpackers with turning on their wheel hubs manually to get through the first creek crossing. Here we spoke to some people who have just returned from the Cape York and told us about Gunshot and the corrugations.

We continue to drive to Cooktown and stop for a beer at The Lions Den Hotel.

We arrived on Thursday and lunched at Smithfield (north Cairns). Then drove around Redlynch and Lake Placid. We found a caravan park called Cool Waters at Brinsmead near Freshwater and we have views of the mountains and a creek running along our camp site. On Friday we went to Cairns city and checked out the lagoon pool and surrounding shops. Then on Saturday we drove to Port Douglas, Ellis Beach and surrounds. We watched some hang gliders at the scenic drive lookout. It was awesome.

We spent Sunday at Trinity Beach which is quite popular and has some nice local cafe's and restaurants. You can see the marina at Yorkeys Knob. On Monday we got the scenic train from Freshwater to Kuranda and returned on the Skyrail. I recommend doing the Skyrail if you are in Cairns. You can see the amazing rainforest meet the sea. You can also see Green Island in the distance.

Next, we are heading to the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Cape York.

Innisfail - Kurrimine Beach and Mission Beach

Kurrimine Beach is a small town between Mission Beach and Innisfail. We are the youngest guests in this quiet, clean and tidy tourist park. We are glad that this is a decent sized patch of grass and it is quite private. Marcelo noticed a caravan which had a sticker on it "Adventure Before Dementia"... Our nearest neighbours were a couple from NZ in a motor home introduced by Ian.

The next day we picnicked at Mission Beach and watched some people skydive.

Ingham - Wallaman Falls, Girringun NP

We visited the township of Paluma and Crystal Falls with a historic bridge then headed for Girringun National Park. These are both beautiful national parks with rainforest and views of the sea and surrounding coastline. Wallaman Falls is impressive with a sheer drop of 268m with water fed from Stoney Creek. Marcelo and I did a short rainforest walk to the creek next to our campsite.

More palm trees, backpackers, Wicked vans, motor homes and caravans. The caravan park is chockers! We are staying across the road from a long stretch of beach at Rowes Bay. We did lots of walking along the impressive foreshore - The Strand and everywhere you go there are views of Magnetic Island. The foreshore has a free water park, man-made rockpool by the sea and cafes. Lots of bbq and picnic areas and playgrounds.

We are unsure whether to leave the car and our gear here and get the ferry across to the island. There are so many islands, so little time. We parked the car for the day and caught the Sunferry to Magnetic Island (aka Maggie). There is also a car ferry called Fantasea which departs from the other side of the river at Townsville. We swam at Alma Bay in late afternoon when the tide is high. Marcelo and I did a scenic walk back to the jetty in the early evening. There are lots of US marines, soldiers and airforce about town and Magnetic Island. We saw their uniformed superiors keeping an eye on them out on the town and patrolling the streets.
Also visited Reef HQ Aquarium.

Picturesque country town meets beach is the best way to explain it. Marcelo and I went for a swim in Rose Bay. Waters are crystal clear with mountain and island views. Also did the lookout walk at Horseshoe Bay. We also see Rob and Anne who are here from New Zealand. They were our camp neighbours at Airlie Beach.

All of the caravan parks are full so we spend the night in a cabin at a new unrated caravan park. Our cabin has a flat screen TV and we were told by the owners that the cast and crew from the film "Australia" starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman stayed for 10 weeks during the shoot.

Marcelo and I drove 330kms through Sarina and stopped briefly at Mackay. The area from Sarina onwards is mostly sugarcane country and coal mining. It was getting late so we went straight for a camp site at Smalleys Beach in Cape Hillsborough NP, except that all 10 spots are taken. We opt for plan B, which is 10kms away to a town called Seaforth. The caravan park is run by the Council at $16 p/night with hot showers, bbq, water and shelters with lighting. We met some grey nomads with caravans and motorhomes. There are many grassy areas right on the beach with views to Newry Island and Brampton Island in the distance. Some rainbow lorikeets are here to greet us. The forecast is sunny weather for next four to five days - perfect!

Later we explored Mackay and its northern beaches - Dolphin Heads, Blacks Beach and Eimeo. Eimeo has a pub at the top of the hill with spectacular views and a lovely park with the best beach.

Rockhampton

At the information centre at South Rockhampton (aka Rocky) there is a Spire which marks the tropic of capricorn. Marcelo and I didn't realise that Rocky is the beef capital of Australia. There are sculptures of cattle scattered around the city centre and north Rocky. More rain on Monday and it cleared up by Tuesday afternoon. Luckily on Wednesday there was sunshine and everything had a chance to dry. We managed to pick up some supplies and get a hose for the engine replaced. We enjoyed a walk along the Fitzroy River with views of Mt Archer in the distance.

Yeppoon is 47kms west of Rockhampton. Stunning coastline from Yeppoon to Emu Park even though it is raining. There are views to Great Keppel Island. On Sunday the sun came out and we went for a drive to the Sandy Point section of Byfield NP. The gravel road was a bit rough with potholes. We wandered through Rydges Resort which has an amazing pool. One of the highlights was a seafood lunch at the park at Yeppoon. Also enjoyed the walk along the marina at Rosslyn Bay - absolute magic!

The Toyota Surf engine had to be replaced and Marcelo spent the next couple of days searching where we can get an engine and costs for parts. Most of the places that provide parts are in Brisbane and we are about 300kms away. Everything is going to take at least 1-2 days to get to Chinchilla. We decide to wait to hear from the mechanic about exactly what parts are needed on Friday afternoon and book first thing Tuesday morning, since Monday is a public holiday. We need to decide between a reconditioned or second hand engine.

Chinchilla is a small farming and mining town. It is also known for its melon festival. A new enviro friendly coal fired power station was set up recently in the town. The White Gums Motel is an excellent 4star motor inn with internet access and satellite TV. It looks like we are going to be in Chinchilla for several days. Julie sorts out accommodation and car hire entitlements with NRMA while Marcelo sorts out the Surf.

The next few days we walk around town to settle in. It is sunny during the day with chilly nights. The town has a market every third Sunday of each month.

Monday 11 June - Queens Birthday holiday. Across the road from the White Gums Motel is the Pioneer Cemetery and a park with a picnic tables. We decide this is a good spot to unpack our tent to let it dry out. We met two local boys ages 4 and 6 named Keenan and Brodie. Later, an elderly couple in their late 70s, Beryl and Hector were having lunch at the table beside us and join us for a chat.

Saturday 16 June - We've been in Chinchilla for over a week now. The car's engine had to be replaced and the replacement engine didn't arrive until Thursday 14th June. The old engine is out and the new one is mostly in but the mechanics don't work on the weekend so we have to wait until Monday. They said the car would be ready on Monday afternoon.

Monday 18 June - We finally got the car back today after more than a week of waiting for repairs. The mechanic worked for us on Saturday to get the car ready for Monday morning. Thanks to the guys on the Toyota Surf site for your help. We'll head out of here tomorrow to continue the trip, after 12 nights in Chinchilla. Hopefully we won't have any more mechanical trouble.

We packed our tent in the rain at Isla Gorge then drove to Taroom for breakfast. We planned to go to Injune, but the unsealed road from Taroom to Injune was closed because it had been raining for a couple of days. We decided to go via Miles for a fuel stop which is further but at least it is a sealed road.

About 30kms outside of Miles on the Warrego Highway, heading towards Roma, while Julie is driving, the auto transmission oil heat signal on the Surf lit up, the coolant temp went up and smoke started coming out from under the bonnet. We pulled over to the side of the road outside a property called JayDee. Smoke was coming out from under the bonnet. There was a fair bit of smoke and it took a while for the smoke to settle down. It didn't look good. We waited at least 15 mins before trying to start the car again, more smoke came out, so we switched the car off immediately. It was just before 1.00pm when Julie called the NRMA and we were told that we will be advised when the RACQ tow truck will be able to pick us up. We have Telstra NextG but during the next hour mobile reception dropped out.

Later, an ambulance vehicle pulls over and we spoke to the guy and advised him of our situation. He kindly offers us his CDMA phone so Julie can make a call. The RACQ advise that the tow truck will be another hour, about 3pm, and ask whether we want to go 100kms to Roma or back 30kms to Miles. We chose Miles because it is closer. It's a relief for us that we are able to talk to the RACQ because we didn't know if or when someone was coming and we no longer had mobile phone reception, lucky the ambulance officer stopped and assisted. Later a lifeguard vehicle also offered assistance and we told him we were waiting to be towed back to Miles.

The RACQ truck arrived with very deflated rear tyres (he'd been bogged on the way). He assisted Marcelo with positioning our Surf onto the truck. Also, the Surf was close to getting bogged from being pushed onto mud in the driveway of the JayDee property. Coolant came gushing out as our Surf was being driven onto the truck. The RACQ driver then winched the Surf for the last few metres onto the truck before tying it down.

We head to Miles and the mechanics weren't too pleased to see us or our Surf. So the RACQ tow truck driver telephones their mechanic and asks if its okay for him to take us to their workshop based in Chinchilla; a Holden dealership called Ainsworth Motors. By the time we got there it was around 5pm. As we are NRMA Premium Care members we are entitled to $700 accommodation and $700 car hire (100kms per day) in the case of a major breakdown. Accommodation at the White Gums Motel is booked for us by NRMA and is within walking distance to the RACQ mechanic. At that time, the service manager told us that the engine has had it and its going to be a while to get it fixed, especially with the long weekend coming up.

As we left Kalpowar very early, we decide to drive through Cania Gorge NP, another popular spot for families especially during school holidays. The main road through Cania Gorge is sealed and there are many walks, to a mine and some caves, if you plan to stay here. You can also hire a bike or canoe near Lake Cania. There are two private caravan parks located near the gorge and camping is not permitted inside the park. We drove to the impressive lookouts at the gorge and the lake. We lunched at a town called Biloela - or Bilo for short.

More driving through cattle country and we can see some mountains in the distance. The track to Isla Gorge lookout and camping area goes for 1.3kms and is off the main road to Taroom and Miles. There are lots of road trains on this road. Isla Gorge panorama and surrounds is amazing. There are many cliff walls and gorges. It is hard to believe that camping is allowed so close to the gorge, right on the edge of a cliff. Also had a quick chat to the QPWS ranger who happened to be there when we arrived. Bush camping is permitted throughout the park. We are 392 metres above sea level here and notice the mist and rain coming in. There is a lady travelling on her own and later, another vehicle, a Nissan Patrol ute with a Trayon, joins us in the camping area.

Overnight there was some heavy rain and it is forecast to rain for a couple of days. The next day the other campers leave. We decide to stay and wait it out before heading to Injune and Carnarvon Gorge NP. Usually the unsealed roads are closed after heavy rain, so we thought we will wait it out. Lucky there is a large picnic shelter and we have internet access (wireless broadband) that keeps us amused for a while. Also went for a drive to nearest town, Taroom, to pick up some supplies. The next day, there is more rain. We've been listening to the radio and the forecast is rain clearing in the next few days. So we're going head off for Injune.

We drove 91km northwest of Gin Gin (from Bundaberg) along the Bruce Highway, along some picturesque countryside and vineyards to Kalpowar State Forest camping area. It is a bit remote, but very clean and tidy.

The camping area has rainwater tanks, toilets and a large shelter. The weather is warm and sunny then later it begins to shower. It is an ideal spot for scouts or large groups as there is a large open grass field.

Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach to Bargara (near Bundaberg)

When we left Fraser Island we heard on the radio that rain was expected over the next several days. This was not good because if we head inland some of the roads could be closed. Also, if we head up the coast, its not the best weather for swimming. So we decide to go and check out Bundaberg and decide what to do later. We get the underbody car wash done at Rainbow Beach and enjoy a nice lunch there afterwards. On the way from Rainbow Beach to Bundaberg, we passed through Maryborough and afterwards many fields of sugar cane and farming country.

Bundaberg is a gateway to Queensland's coral coast which explains why we see more backpackers. Bargara is 13kms east of Bundaberg and is a lovely beach town. Bargara is a popular place marketed towards retirees. We stay at an Ocean front caravan park, even though its raining, we decide its a place to get our washing done with views of the ocean from our cabin. We decide to head west to Carnarvon Gorge NP before we go further north. Its going to be a long drive with over 400 kms and agree that we will have to stop at least twice overnight to get there without rushing.

Fraser Island (Great Sandy National Park)

After driving onto the barge at Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach, we wonder what the drive would be like on Fraser Island. The barge only takes about 20 minutes and costs $80 return. We get to Hook Point and start driving. We expect to see lots of people and tourist buses. There is almost no-one. We miss the sign to camping area near Dilli Village but later see signs for our camp area - Wongai (means - carpet snake), along the beach at Fraser. We arrived around 1.30pm. It is a perfect spot with beach views. The weather is warm and sunny. Marcelo has set-up a large tarp area in front of the tent. Some careless European backpackers decide that 1km of camping area is not big enough and decide to put their tent within metres of our car. Our tent bag, we thought, would be an indicator to probably pick a spot a bit further away. Unfortunately the backpackers ignored this and continued to set up their tent. Marcelo approached the 4 females and 2 males and asked them politely to move away and told them there was another 1km of camping area, that was not being used by anyone else.

Our main concern is that with bush camping, bush toileting becomes more uncomfortable when too many people are close together. Ohhh derrr! It's not that we are anti-social, just common sense.

We spot our first dingo at sunset. Dingoes are quite timid and were just checking us out. It is truly a beautiful place and we love it especially the sound of the waves. There is a fair bit of info in the brochures about how to be dingo safe eg. keep all food and garbage locked away, travel in pairs or groups and not to leave small children unsupervised.

We hope the backpackers that have camped way too close leave the next morning, and they did, as we had planned to stay by the beach for several days and nights. It was lovely, especially with the full moon which meant that we could sit on the beach late at night and have a lot of light.

30th May - Eurong Station, Central Station and Lake McKenzie.

Some spectacular rainforest and good camping areas via the inland roads. Lake McKenzie is a superb freshwater lake and we went in for a quick dip. Quite a busy place with more backpackers and some tourist operators.

31st May - Lake Wabby, Stonetool Sandblow and Hammerstone Sandblow, Eli Creek, Maheno Ship Wreck.

1st June - Drive north to Indian Head and Waddy Point. South to Lake Boomanjin.

Accommodation

We've been camping 3-7 nights as much as possible then staying in self contained cabins for 1-2 nights. We prefer 4 star - ensuite cabins so we can do our washing and recharge everything, from mobiles to camping equipment, as well as having a nice hot shower. We take our own linen and pillows as this can save some $. In our budget we are including camping fees (about $4.50 per person per day in National Parks) and cabin rates as part of the accommodation. Depending on the season and location, self contained ensuite cabins tariffs range between $65-85. including crockery and cooking facilities. I like to give the crockery a wash before and after use when we are not using our own.

Driving

Marcelo and I have been sharing the driving. Marcelo has been driving the tougher 4WD tracks especially at Pebbly Beach and near Rainbow Beach. I tend to cover the long distances on the highway. It was also fun for me driving along the sand on Fraser Island. We stick to 2 hrs each at a time then swap. We have passed lots of rented Wicked vans especially since Ballina. Also along the highways and smaller roads, we tend to see lots of motor homes and cars with camper trailers.

May 26, 27 and 28th.

Time to say au revoir to Alex Beach and head north to Rainbow Beach to prepare for Fraser Island. QPWS are very organised and camp sites need to be pre-booked. Only hiccup is trying to decide which place to stay and for how long. We were advised by some of the rangers after enquiring about what to see and do that it is best to travel on the beach 2 hrs either side of low tide ie. if low tide is 1.00pm, it is best to drive between 11am - 3pm.

Rainbow Beach is a lovely beach town with cafe's, accommodation and caravan park. The barge to Fraser Island leaves at Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach. A Toyota Fishing Competition on Fraser was finishing up so we decided to camp at Freshwater Camp in the Great Sandy National Park, Cooloola Section, for a few days.

Marcelo wanted to see the coloured sands and I was impressed with the hot showers (4 mins for $1) and toilets at the camp.

The first 3km to Bymien Picnic Area is 2WD then next 13km is 4WD to Freshwater. The road is very sandy and due to recent rain was boggy in some sections. We notice that there are quite a few 4WD's. It is a very popular place, especially on the weekend. We decided to stay an extra night, especially because it rained the second day. We noticed some of the cars that we had seen back in town at Rainbow Beach are now passing us on this road going in the opposite direction and we figured out they must have driven along the beach from Rainbow to Freshwater. Lucky there are lots of places to pass along the inland road.

Freshwater Camp is a lovely spot and we had pet brush turkeys and goannas; also a a python at the camp next to us. We got some practice driving on the beach and explored some of the lovely rainforest.
